Terms of Service

Agreement to these terms

By creating an account or using HeirTree in any way, you agree to these Terms of Service. HeirTree is operated by RedDevs ("we", "us"). If you don't agree with these terms, please don't use the service.

Your account

You need to give us accurate information when you create an account, and keep your password or passkey secure. You must be at least 13 years old to have a HeirTree account. You're responsible for what happens under your account, so let us know quickly if you think someone else has access to it.

Trees, roles, and members

Every family tree has an Owner, and can have Editors and Viewers. Owners control who's a member of a tree, what role each member has, and tree-level actions like renaming, splitting, or deleting the tree. Editors can add and edit tree content — people, relationships, dates, photos. Viewers can look, but not change anything. Inviting someone to a tree gives them the access their role implies, so invite thoughtfully — especially before handing out Editor access.

Your content

You — and your tree's other members — own the content you add to HeirTree: the people, photos, notes, and everything else. By adding it, you grant RedDevs the license we need to host, store, process, and display it to that tree's members, so we can actually run the service for you. We don't claim any broader right to publish or reuse your content beyond that.

You're responsible for what you add — especially information and photos of living people. Please only add these with their permission, or on some other family-appropriate basis (for instance, because they're your minor child, or because the information is already known within the family).

Acceptable use

• No unlawful content.
• No harassment or abuse of other members, whether through a tree or an invitation.
• No attempts to break, probe, or overload HeirTree.
• No scraping or bulk-extracting other members' data.
• No impersonating another person or tree member.

Data portability

Any member with access to a tree can export it as a GEDCOM file at any time — a full, standard, portable copy of that tree's data. We think that's an important guarantee, not a nice-to-have, so it isn't gated behind a plan or a support request.

The service

HeirTree is provided "as is." We work hard to keep it available and reliable, but it may change over time, and it may occasionally be unavailable — for maintenance, an outage, or something outside our control. Family history is irreplaceable, so please don't treat HeirTree as your only backup: use GEDCOM export to keep your own copy. HeirTree is currently free to use. If that ever changes, we'll tell you clearly, and in advance, before anything is charged.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, RedDevs isn't liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for content that a tree's members add — we can't verify every fact or photo added to a family tree. Nothing in these terms takes away any right that consumer protection law gives you regardless of what we say here.

Termination

You can stop using HeirTree and ask us to delete your account at any time — email [email protected]. We may suspend or terminate an account that breaks these terms; where it's reasonable to do so, we'll let you know first.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Belgium.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as HeirTree evolves; continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the update. Questions about these terms: [email protected].
